Many parents and “parenting experts" get this CO Many parents and “parenting experts" get this COMPLETELY wrong about highly sensitive, empathic, emotionally intense kids: Telling these fiery ones to "calm down" or "stop overreacting" is damaging. For deeply feeling children, their emotions ARE their reality. They’re not being “overly sensitive”. When I was about 8 or 9, the chicken pox was going around. I remember hearing people talk about how itchy and uncomfortable it was and how scratching the pox would lead to scars. Because my body was always more sensitive (meaning, itches felt itchier and a mild cold felt like a flu) I was reallllly nervous about getting chicken pox. One day I wasn’t feeling well and went to the doctor. They ran some tests and called our house a few hours later. (No MyChart back in the 80’s!) Results were in: Chicken pox. I fainted into the plush, blue corduroy sofa in the family room. I was legitimately overwhelmed with fear and anxiety about what was coming. “What a drama queen” “A Sandra Bernhard” “Stop making a big deal out of nothing” These were phrases I heard a lot growing up. Not because my parents didn’t love me— on the contrary, I never went a moment without feeling their love and support. But I also grew up with a twisted understanding of my innate sensitivity. Yes, I’m more intense. More sensitive. More deeply feeling. More— but not "too much". That’s why I do the work I do now. To help parents raise a generation of highly sensitive, empathic, emotionally intense kids that feel GOOD about their “more”. Your love for your kids is not where you need my support.
